Lulu in Dresden

Semperoper Dresden presents a new production of Alban Berg’s Lulu this evening. The opera is structured in a musical symmetry that maps the rise and fall of Lulu the seductress, as she makes her way through husbands and lovers. Berg died in 1935 before putting the finishing touches on the final act. His widow refused to allow another composer to fill in the missing gaps, and a satisfying version with Friedrich Cerha’s fleshed out third act could only be performed after her death in 1976. Cornelius Meister is the Musical Director, staging is by Stefan Herheim, and lead roles are played by: Gisela Stille, Christa Mayer, Barbara Senator, Joachim Goltz, Nils Harald Sodal, Markus Marquardt, Jürgen Müller, Ketil Hugaas, Almas Svilpa, and Aaron Pegram.
